Portuguese actress will be protagonist, and also antagonist, of the piece with only women of the North American playwright Gerald Thomas.
“Flood”, the long awaited new play by Gerald Thomas, a North American playwright born in Rio de Janeiro, will feature a Portuguese actress, Maria de Lima, in the role of the protagonist. And the antagonist, too. The tragicomedy that mixes fantasy and reflection opens today at Teatro Anchieta, in the Social Service of Commerce of Consolação, in São Paulo.
“In 2014, Maria de Lima stole the scene in several moments in the spectacle Entredentes, also of Thomas, carried out by Ney Latorraca and exhibited in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro”, according to the theatrical promoter Ney Motta. The actress, with more than 20 years of film, theater and television career, also participated in the British film Beast and played Catarina de Aragão in the award-winning I Am Henry, among other roles.
In the Flood, Mary will give body to a controversial figure, in the words of the author, “a holy DesGoogle of Misfortunes, seeking to save in an imaginary oasis information in a pile piled up in rubble and rotted, clusters of wikipeds, billions of computers and iPhones in a world where there are conflicts of war, they announce apocalypses and if false news is generated “.
The actress, known by the Portuguese public for her participation in the humorous series “The Woman of the Minister” and in the musicals of Filipe La Feria, is considered by Thomas “my all time star” and presented in Brazilian magazine Glamurama as “a hurricane”. Based in London about 15 years ago, she has worked with the playwright since the founding of the London Dry Opera Company in 2010, and sees Flood as “another exciting project proposed by Gerald.”
The play, which runs until December 17, has a cast entirely female and will be spoken in Spanish and Portuguese, making a kind of provocative clash between the two colonizing powers that have divided the world.
This is not the first spectacle in which Thomas addresses the question of speed and excessive information, returning to a theme that worked in 1999, still in the early days of the internet, in the show Ventriloquist. Almost two decades later, and with a technological revolution, information and social networks in the middle, it returns to the theme: “For everything, today, there is a quick response, Google is sanctified by this generation but nothing is in their minds, nothing no one else reads a book, “says Thomas. “The play is therefore a sort of” anti-saint, “or” the captain of an ark that is not, “he continues, using a play on words. “I speak of this modern flood that we live in but I do not tell stories, I only create images, I propose ideas and connections, the public does the rest.”
